Little Closets Kids II

posted in: LIC, Photography, Portraits Sessions (Tags: , , , ) - No Comments

Despite the storm, parents pushed their strollers through the snow and made it to the shoot. We were at Little Closets for almost 3 hours with the kids and as always we had a lot of fun.

Here is a short video showing what happened today at Little Closets.

Thanks again to Little Closets for letting this happen.

Gallery Wrap Canvas 16×20 Review

posted in: Photography, Prints/Review (Tags: , , , , , ) - No Comments

I’ve been getting very good deals through twitter and recently I saw the opportunity to get a free canvas 16×20 gallery wrap with Zaza Gallery in exchange for advertising them on my blog. Since I’m a canvas-lover I decided to do it.

After completing a few requirements and e-mailing the digital file, I received my canvas 13 days after their confirmation (CA-NY)

Canvas 8x10

I have to admit that I completely forgot about it and since this wasn’t an formal order through their website, I didn’t receive a shipping confirmation, I was surprised to receive a big FedEx package with a canvas well protected in bubble wrap.

The colors and the texture are great, I submitted a very bright and colorful image and it really fulfilled my expectations.

Here you can kind of see the texture of the canvas:
Texture Canvas 8x10

I asked for a gallery wrap, which means that the picture is wrapped around the edges:
Corner Canvas 8x10

The only thing that I’m not 100% happy with is the finish on the back of the canvas, in the end doesn’t matter too much since we’re not looking at it when it’s on the wall, but I’m being honest and don’t want to hide any detail. It’s not a big deal but I’m comparing with the canvases that I have from 2 different companies (including two that I got for free), both of them have the back of the canvas very well finished.
You can see the picture next:
Back Canvas 8x10

Another detail is that didn’t come with the screws or sticky thing to hang it on the wall, but that’s not a problem.

Overall I’ll give them 4 stars just for those details that easily can be fixed. The canvas itself is great and the most important is the image and it came out excellent, I checked their website and the prices are very low, it’s definitely a good deal for the quality that you’re getting. I’m going to do my next order with them.

014/365 – Falling drops

January 14th, 2010

Water is always great and today I played with it again…

014/365 - Falling

Theme: Macro Abstract

Equipment: D40x, Sb-800, yellow gel (intense), tripod

Settings on camera:
Exposure:0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture:f/14.0
Focal Length:55 mm (18-55mm)
ISO Speed:100
Exposure Bias:0 EV

The way I did this is not the most precise way to do it, but it’s a way to show that can be done with a little equipment as possible.

I’ve seen some videos about how to shoot water drops or water splashes but like a lot of people, I don’t have a lot of equipment so I have to do it with whatever I have handy and in theory you don’t need much.
At the beginning I was going to do this with a plastic bag (so the water would drop in the same spot) but I couldn’t find anything to hold it from above my setup, so that’s why I just held the bottle of water myself and tried to get the focus right =)

Materials: clear bowl, plastic bottle with cap, home made reflector. My regular reflector was too big for my setup so I used a home-made reflector (cardboard and aluminum paper).
Set up

-First I opened a small hole into the cap of the bottle (don’t try this at home =))

-I filled the bottle up completely with water and I just filled the clear bowl up a little more than half.

-Put the yellow gel on the SB-800 and pointed it at the reflector

-Set the camera on the tripod and tried some shots. At the beginning I had trouble finding the right focus and the best thing that worked for me was the plastic bottle (you can use a pen or something else to get the focus). I took a picture and locked the focus there.
focusing

-Once that I had my focus ready (after trying a lot) I started to shoot and shoot.

The Queensborough bridge celebrated its 100th anniversary and I camped in the Gantries of Long Island City (for about 2 hours) to get a good spot to see the fireworks.
